For those who have not visited the Balkans before, Bulgaria is a delight in waiting where the old authentic and original villages are complimented by new developments and where significant investment from the EU and Private Sector has been used to great effect to renovate some of the better Hunting locations. Not only that, our rates for Bulgaria have remained frozen for 3 years running!

The Country is bisected by the Balkan Mountains and indeed much of the Country is rugged yet thinly populated so the areas over which we hunt are significant, most exceeding 20,000Ha (50,000 acres) and the vast majority of this is unfenced.

Sport available includes some Red Stags of staggering proportions, the largest of which in 2011 weighed over 13kgs. These free-roaming wild Deer are complimented by very good examples of Roe Deer too and Fallow may also be found in some regions, although their nomadic nature does tend to find these situated within a fenced environment.

Mouflon are also available in Bulgaria and these tend to be located with the Fallow although the Free-range Chamois indigenous to the region take their mountainous perches high on the cliffs and crags which abound.

One of the most popular species for all hunters is Wild Boar and Bulgaria boasts a significant population of these wonderful creatures. The vast open forests provide a profusion of food for them and as such the Trophy sizes can be significant. Wild Boar can be hunted on foot via walk-and-stalk, shot from high seats and blinds or taken during Driven Hunts which are hugely popular in this Country. While discussing hunting techniques, it is also worthy of note that Bulgaria is a Bow-Hunters Paradise where several of our Estates have purpose-built blinds designed especially for this sport!

In terms of other species, Bulgaria boasts a wide range of Predators which include Brown Bear, Wolves, Jackals and Foxes. There are generally 17 Bear permits issued per annum and locations such as Chepino generally receive one tag since the local population is so large. With so few permits available, those looking to take a Balkan Bear need to book well in advance.

In terms of visitor experience, we have found the welcome to be warm and genuine and having spent time with the local Game Keepers and Forestry Directors can assure visitors that there is enthusiasm and passion for hunting here which is complimented by clean, comfortable and often luxurious accommodation. Local wines are excellent too and the meals that we have enjoyed in this fabulous country have always featured locally produced game and have been of the highest order.

The following gives you a flavour for pricing, and as with all things, if you would welcome more information and images, please visit http://www.thehuntingagency.com/bulgaria/whattoexpectfrombulgaria/ or contact Roo Ellis for an informal conversation:
